Summer Vacation!

Part of being an expat is getting your trip home once a year. Most of the wives/children use that one trip to come home during summer vacation, or to visit family.  We are lucky to still have a home, so we're at home.

I've been enjoying rainy Ohio, but clear air since the beginning of June and will be here until the beginning of August. It is so nice to get a break from expat life and Beijing, but at the same time I feel slightly disconnected.  Almost as if I don't really belong.

It also doesn't help that the husbands, or should I say "working spouse" doesn't have 5-8 weeks of vacation, so they have to stay in Beijing. I'm here in Ohio, playing single married mom again. It could be worse, but it is hard on kiddo to not have her dad around for most of the summer. We have plenty of friends and family is keep us busy.

Beautiful view from my family room in Ohio.

  1. I have the opportunity to move for work to Beijing.
I read your interesting blog but my main question for you is are you encourage this step or not?

I'm still a bit hesitant about it.

  2. Thank you for your blog. I found it useful, as my husband is thinking about going to Beijing for work. We are in debate now if he should go alone for the 2 year period or if the whole family should go with him. I have 2 small children, 1 and 4 years old. What are you thoughts about having small children/young family there as part of the expat lifestyle?

  3. Hi ladies, sorry Andrea for the late reply! I don't think any place in the world is perfect, everywhere has the good and the bad. I think Beijing is what you make it. There are lots of resources for playdates, friendships and friends here, and it isn't a "hard" life by any means, there are just a lot of struggles and the air quality obviously isn't the best. We make do each day and I'm glad I'm here versus sitting at home without my husband. I did that for too long.
